Concrete Saws, Power Cutters and Equipment
The right saw makes the blade. A perfectly matched diamond blade on an underpowered or wrong-format machine will cut slowly, wander off line and wear unevenly. Handheld Power Cutters
Cut-off saws are the workhorse of concrete cutting: patches, pipe, wall openings, rebar, curb and anything a walk-behind cannot reach. Gas machines like the Husqvarna K770 still lead on raw power and untethered runtime, and remain the default for open-site production work. Battery cutters have closed the gap considerably — the Husqvarna K1 PACE and Makita XEC01 deliver near gas-equivalent cutting with no exhaust, which makes them the only sensible option indoors, in basements, in tunnels and anywhere emissions are restricted. Handheld cutters typically take 12″ or 14″ blades and give you around 4″ to 5″ of depth in a single pass.
Walk-Behind and Flat Saws
Walk-behind saws such as the Husqvarna FS305 and FS400 exist for one reason: long, deep, dead-straight cuts that no handheld can produce. The machine carries the weight, the blade runs on a fixed arbor at a controlled depth, and the operator simply steers. Use them for slab removal, expansion and control joints, roadway cutting and trenching. Depth is set by blade diameter, and these machines take much larger blades than a handheld — commonly 18″ to 36″, giving 6″ to 12″ of depth. If you are cutting more than a few meters of straight line, a walk-behind will be faster, straighter and far less punishing than a handheld.
Dust-Control, Tile and Masonry Saws
Tile and masonry saws cover the precision end of the work. In practice that means a functioning water feed at the recommended flow, or a shroud and HEPA extractor sized to the tool. Matching Blades and Saws
Two numbers decide whether a blade and saw belong together: arbor and maximum RPM. Handheld cutters and grinders usually run 7/8″ or 5/8″ arbors, high-speed and walk-behind saws take 1″ or 20mm, and stone bridge saws are often 1″ or 50mm. Reducer bushings adapt between them, but the RPM rating is not negotiable — the maximum speed stamped on the blade must be at or above your saw’s rated speed. Beyond fit, match the bond to the material and the machine’s power: a large-diameter blade on an underpowered saw will bog, overheat and glaze.
Buying a Saw and Blade Package
Specifying the machine and its consumables together avoids the most common and most expensive mistake in this trade — a good saw paired with whatever blade happened to be cheapest that week. Do I need a walk-behind saw or a handheld cutter?
Handhelds suit patches, pipe, wall openings and anything awkward to reach. Walk-behind flat saws suit long, deep, straight cuts in slabs and roadways. Crews doing both kinds of work usually run one of each.
How deep will a concrete saw cut?
Roughly one third of the blade diameter. A 14″ blade on a handheld gives about 4″ to 5″; a walk-behind running an 18″ to 36″ blade gives 6″ to 12″. For a full-depth slab cut, step up the machine rather than forcing a handheld.
What equipment helps with OSHA silica compliance?

Why is my saw cutting slowly or wandering off line?
Usually a blade problem rather than a machine problem — a glazed blade, a bond too hard for the material, or a blade too large for the saw’s power. A bent arbor flange or a warped blade will also pull a cut off line.
