Description
A drill stand is not an accessory to a core drill. It is what determines whether the hole comes out where it was marked, perpendicular to the face, and without the barrel binding halfway through. Most coring problems that get blamed on the bit or the motor are actually alignment problems, and alignment is the stand’s job.
What the stand actually does
Three things, all of which an operator cannot do reliably by hand. It fixes the drilling axis so the barrel stays perpendicular through the whole penetration. It takes the reaction torque, which is what makes larger diameters safe to drill at all. And it delivers steady, controlled feed pressure — the thing that most affects both drilling speed and how long the crown lasts.
Anchoring it properly
The anchor is the weak point in most setups. Use the correct anchor for the substrate, set it in sound material and not in a patch, and check the column for movement before you start rather than discovering it at half depth. On a floor where you cannot anchor, a vacuum base or a jack column is the alternative — but never a stand that is merely resting on its feet.
