Walk-Behind and Flat Saws for Slabs and Roadways

Walk-behind saws exist for one job that no handheld can do: long, deep, dead-straight cuts. The machine carries its own weight, the blade runs on a fixed arbor at a set depth, and the operator steers rather than supports. Why the Format Matters

Three things change when the saw sits on wheels. Depth increases dramatically, because the machine can carry an 18″ to 36″ blade and reach 6″ to 12″ where a handheld tops out around 5″. Accuracy improves, because the blade is fixed in a frame and tracks a line rather than following an operator’s arms. And fatigue disappears as a limiting factor — a crew cutting fifty meters of joint by hand will slow down and wander long before a walk-behind will. If you are cutting more than a few meters in a straight line, the format pays for itself in a single job.

Control and expansion joints in fresh slabs, cut early to relieve shrinkage before random cracking sets in. Slab removal, where a full-depth perimeter cut lets sections be lifted out cleanly instead of broken up. Roadway and pavement cutting for utility trenches and patch repairs, where a clean vertical edge means a better reinstatement. Trenching layout, cutting both sides of a run before breaking out the middle.

Blade Selection and Depth

Depth is set by blade diameter, following the same rough one-third rule as any diamond blade. An 18″ blade gives around 6″, a 24″ around 8″, and a 36″ around 12″. Match the bond to the material — soft bond for hard cured concrete, hard bond for green concrete and asphalt — and confirm the arbor and maximum RPM suit the machine. Fitting an oversized blade to gain depth on a saw without the power to drive it simply glazes the blade and overloads the engine. Green-concrete joint cutting is its own case: cut too early and the slab ravels at the edges, too late and it has already cracked, so timing matters as much as the blade.

Water and Silica

Flat saws are almost always run wet, with water fed to both sides of the blade from an on-board tank or a site supply. That is partly blade life and partly compliance — wet cutting is the recognized engineering control for respirable silica under OSHA Table 1, and on a machine cutting continuously for hours the dust load from dry cutting would be substantial. Keep the tank filled and check both nozzles are actually flowing before starting a long run.
