Diamond Polishing Pads for Stone and Concrete
Polishing pads take a ground surface through to a finish, working up through progressive grits until the scratch pattern is fine enough to read as gloss. They are the standard method for countertop edges and cut-outs, vanity work, and polished-concrete floors. How Progressive Grits Work
The principle is simple and completely unforgiving. Each grit exists only to remove the scratch pattern left by the grit before it. A 50-grit pad leaves deep scratches; 100 removes those and leaves shallower ones; and so on up through 200, 400, 800, 1500 and 3000 until the remaining scratches are too fine for the eye to resolve and the surface reads as polished. Skip a step and the coarse scratches from two grits back are still there under the gloss at the end — they will show clearly in raking light, and the only remedy is to go back down and start again. Work each grit until the previous pattern is genuinely gone before moving up.
Wet Working
Wet polishing is the norm for good reasons. Water keeps the pad and the workpiece cool, which protects the resin bond in the pad and prevents burnishing or discolouring the stone. It flushes away the spent slurry so the pad cuts fresh material rather than grinding its own debris. And it controls dust entirely, which matters on stone containing silica such as granite and engineered quartz. Keep a steady feed of water on the surface and the pads clear; a pad clogged with dried slurry stops cutting and starts polishing prematurely, which gives a false sense of progress.
Stone Versus Concrete
Both take the same progressive-grit approach, but they behave differently. Granite, marble and engineered stone are dense and consistent, so the grit sequence proceeds predictably and a high gloss is achievable. Concrete is variable — it contains aggregate, sand and paste of different hardnesses in the same surface, so early grits may cut unevenly and you may expose aggregate as you go. Densifier is normally applied partway through a concrete polish to harden the paste and let the finer grits build gloss. Do not expect a concrete floor to behave like a slab of granite.
Pad Care and Storage
Rinse pads before the slurry dries on them and let them dry before stacking. Dried slurry hardens into the resin and blinds the diamond, which is the most common reason a pad set underperforms on its second job. Keep the set together and in grit order so nobody grabs the wrong one mid-sequence — a single out-of-order pad undoes the step before it.

How long does a set of polishing pads last?
