Description

Repointing starts with getting the old mortar out, and getting it out without damaging the brick either side. Grind too wide and the new joint looks wrong; grind too shallow and the fresh mortar has nothing to key into. The rule of thumb is a depth of two to two and a half times the joint width, cut square, with the brick untouched.

Why the rim is thick

A tuck point blade runs a deliberately thick rim — several times the thickness of a cutting blade — so that one pass opens a joint to something close to its finished width. A standard blade would need two or three passes side by side, which is slower and far more likely to nick an arris. The thickness also gives the blade the lateral stiffness to hold a straight line along a long horizontal bed joint.

Sizes and material

Three sizes — 4″, 4.5″ and 5″ — for an angle grinder, dry rated, with a medium bond suited to the lime and cement mortars found in block, brick and general masonry.

Work along the bed joints first, then the perpends, and run a vacuum shroud: mortar removal is enclosed, repetitive, and dusty. For sealing cracks rather than joints, use the Crack Chaser Blade. See all tuck point and crack chaser blades.
