Description

The blade fits the job and the arbor does not. It is a small problem with a big cost, because a blade that will not mount is a wasted trip whatever it cost. Bushings are the cheapest insurance in the truck box.

Why arbor sizes vary at all

Blades are manufactured for a range of machines and a range of markets, so the same 14″ diameter can arrive with different center bores. Larger blades commonly carry a 1″ bore because that is what walk-behind and flat saws use; smaller handheld blades typically come with a smaller bore to suit cut-off saws and grinders. A reducer bushing sits inside the larger bore and steps it down to match the smaller spindle on your saw.

Fitting them properly

• Seat it fully. A bushing that is proud on one face will not let the flanges clamp square, and a blade running out of true is dangerous, not just inaccurate.
• One bushing at a time. Never stack two to make up a size.
• Check the direction arrow after fitting — it is easy to reverse a blade while wrestling with a bushing.
• Confirm the blade is rated for your saw’s spindle speed before adapting anything to fit it.
